Ark by David Breuer-Weil was included in ‎Animal Farm – Beastly Muses and Metaphors at Sotheby’s S|2 Gallery alongside works by Modern and Contemporary masters including Picasso, Freud, Hockney, Warhol, Ghenie and Turk. This exhibition explores the multifaceted relationship between man and animal.

Curated by Susanne van Hagen, the exhibition includes 56 works that illustrate how many artists across history have used animals as their muses. According to Sotheby’s ‘from the beginning of recorded human history, animals have been embedded in man’s psyche, represented in literature, music, religion and astrology. ’Many of the artists in Animal Farm: Beastly Muses and Metaphors ultimately act as metaphors for their deeper artistic explorations: mortality, memory, identity, religion and the human body.’

Breuer-Weil’s Ark is a contemporary interpretation of the iconic subject of Noah’s Ark, comprising over seventy sculpted creatures in a single work, including species both extant and extinct, real and fantasy. These specially selected animals represent all living things on our planet and the sculpture has been read by Sotheby’s as ‘a physical metaphor for the world.’

The exhibition ran at Sotheby’s S|2 Gallery, 31 St George Street, London W1S 2FJ, from 8 June – 22nd July 2016.

Date: June 2016 – July 2016
