This installation marks the special commission of a contemporary sculpture of Laocoön (Philosopher)  by Laocoon Gallery, Rome and London. Breuer-Weil has reinterpreted the iconic sculpture in a contemporary fashion, casting into bronze a head emerging from the ground. This installation will include related studies for this striking new piece, as well as a new pair of monumental etchings titled The Sculpture Garden.

Breuer-Weil comments “In many of my sculptures I start with destruction rather than creation. I pour out large sheets of plaster and shatter them, using the randomly broken pieces to construct a human form. This carries with it the energy of destruction and creation. This work belongs to my series of sculptures titled ‘Philosopher’. These heads epitomise human endurance, the heads appear armour- plated to resist adversity. Clearly endurance is one of the main themes of the Laocoön and I wanted to capture that in a jagged, aggressive and very physical manner.”

The exhibition will be on display at the Laocoon Gallery from 12 September 2019  through 12 October 2019.
