Tomasso is honoured to unveil a major new work by David Breuer-Weil, PLEURANTS, which will be exhibited at Tomasso from 10-22 October 2025, and during Frieze London.

Breuer-Weil on PLEURANTS:  Over the last few years I have made a series of works loosely inspired by artistic milestones of the past including The Coviad (based on the Bayeux Tapestry), the Gold Metaverse (based on the Ghent Altarpiece) and The Garden of Contemporary Delights (a contemporary reinterpretation of Bosch’s masterpiece in the Prado). In 2025 I saw some of the Pleurants, the intensely spiritual series of 40 cm tall medieval sculptures (there were originally 82 carvings in Dijon). These seemed to me a remarkable series that distil the most intense emotion, and I wanted to imbue them with strong contemporary relevance especially in view of current world events. I decided to start a series of circa 40 cm tall sculptures made in strengthened plaster that would work as individual pieces as well as an haunting and unforgettable installation, as there are strong commonalities between our time and then, a period of plague and conflict. In my plasters, rapidly executed making use of the inherent spontaneity of the medium, I have emphasised some of the characteristics of the originals, the draped often hooded figures, the gesticulations indicative of an outpouring of emotion, and wildly varied poses.
