The Ten Plagues (from The Coviad), 2021

The Coviad and selected Golden Drawings from the recently published book David Breuer-Weil Golden Drawings to be exhibited at the Ben Uri Museum and Gallery.

The Coviad is an epic 70 part panoramic work inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry on the subject of the experiences of the last year, completed during the third lockdown. Exactly the same size as the Bayeux Tapestry (350,000 sq. cm) this work, executed in pencil and gold leaf, reinterprets many of the motifs in the tapestry with searingly contemporary relevance. It charts the mysterious origins of the pandemic, its global spread, the lockdowns ad support bubbles, applause for the NHS, as well as concurrent events, such as the murder of George Floyd and toppling of statues and general unrest. It concludes on a hopeful note with the arrival of vaccines like angels and the landing of Perseverance on Mars. The Coviad and selected Golden Drawings will be exhibited virtually at the Ben Uri Museum and Gallery and will remain as a permanent virtual exhibition after the launch. David Glasser, Chair of Trustees of the Ben Uri Museum and Gallery comments: “This is a greatly ambitious project by a greatly considered and unsightful artist and we are proud to present his work for the second occasion”.
