DAVID BREUER-WEIL | LANDSCAPES (VOGUE SERIES)
A VIRTUAL EXHIBITION
Painted between summer 2019 and February 2020, just before lockdown, these fourteen works have not been exhibited before. During this period the artist was travelling extensively and inspired by different coastlines, including Denmark, South of France, Italy and the Far East. Breuer-Weil has always painted landscapes alongside other bodies of work, and one of these early landscapes was featured prominently by Vogue, giving the title to the ongoing series. They are a celebration of pure painting, colour and light, and a way of experimenting freely with the medium.
The artist has commented: “Although they appear different, they connect with certain sculptures, made up of shattered plaster elements. I attempt to capture the energy of colour; the series started when I discovered that palettes have a raw beauty, as they are composed of unpremeditated marks, a build-up of colour and texture over which the artist exerts limited control. Initially I literally transformed or broke up my palettes and constructed landscapes. I was also always struck by the walls in Francis Bacon’s studio where he cleaned his brushes and that inspired me to make a feature of what is normally an artistic by-product. I wanted to capture the moment when I look up from the palette to the landscape and distant coast, enacting the transformation of the pure pigment of the palette into recognisable space.”
